Land of the Free?

Inspired by recent (but common for years now) instances of censorship, demonetization, deplatforming and financial terrorism being inflicted on people *IN AMERICA* for simply speaking the truth or asking valid questions. Few example links at bottom of this post.

Joker Scene

Like many other people I found “that scene” from the recent Joker (2019) movie so intense and awesome so I wanted to recreate it somehow. I ended up trying to lay it out like a comic book and tried to do it in a way that felt like the classic “Arkham Asylum” Batman graphic novel. I’m not sure how successful I was in the latter (I have zero experience creating comic books) but I am happy w/the final version in any case. I was torn on putting in any modern-day/non-movie elements but in the end I couldn’t resist fill the top center window frame with some of the evil icons of our “society” as well as an America First ad on the top right television set. Oh yeah and (belated) semi-spoiler warning if you haven’t seen the movie yet (but if you haven’t seen the movie yet – +1 week after opening – I don’t feel bad).

Why the hysteria about the Joker movie?

Here’s to everyone who saw the BBC’s distorted and insulting version of Mosley on the new season of “The Peaky Blinders” TV show researching and learning the truth about him on their own.

By the way for the record I used an old black and white photo of him and a recent color shot of Big Ben along with a tracing technique (which I consider partial cheating artistically) – so this was not all drawn out of thin air! Time lapse video below shows in detail.

Saint Nick

Clearly I’ve been on a kick w/this kind of thing lately … no doubt coming from some combination of inspiration, OCD and whatever red/white/black pills I’ve recently consumed. Anyhow, this past week Nick (who’s a Catholic) had a fair number of pagans or atheists send messages to the show and his responses, as usual, were as hilarious as they were spot on. At some point he joked about how he was “fending of the pagan hordes” and that’s the comment that I couldn’t get out of my head and led to this illustration.

Super POTUS Trump!™ The Game!

My grandfather fought in WWII and I make silly animations, artwork and games/apps. It’s embarrassing but that’s how it goes…

Super POTUS Trump is a “mini” indie video game I made as a tribute to President Trump. It’s currently available now for Windows on Steam and soon should be available for iPad as well (pending Apple review).

Game Development

While I describe the game as “mini” the effort it took to produce it was quite the opposite. At face value the game may not seem like a very big project since a person with average gaming/computer skills could play through the entire thing within 45 minutes (or less). But the making of this game was, by FAR, the biggest, most exhausting personal/hobby project I’ve ever undertaken. Not only was it my first time building a game with the (awesome) unity3d.org game engine – it also involved a ton of iPad artwork production, C# coding, audio hunting/editing, learning an entirely new game store workflow (SteamWorks, on top of Apple) and just about every social media/web skill I could muster as well. For the past ~6 months this project was pretty much a black hole that sucked up every free minute I could find.
While it was a lot of work it was, for the most part, a ton of fun. I do have to admit that towards the end I started wondering if I would ever finish it, questioning why in the world I was making it and wondered the odds that anyone else would even care or enjoy, etc. Fortunately I didn’t give up, called it “done” about a week ago and since then it’s been release for Windows and sent to Apple for review.
I have to say it was hard to call it “done” as there were so many ideas I had that I just had to leave out otherwise I’d never finish it! I told myself *IF* I lived through it and if more than 12 people enjoy this version I *MIGHT* consider making an Episode 2 (since a lot of the coding/etc would already be done). But I can’t even think about that right now!! …

Reviews as of 20170811There have been a few naysayers but thanks to how Steam works you can’t leave a negative review unless you’ve installed the game so hopefully that means not very many haters will bother spamming the reviews – which as of today are holding mostly in the Positive category.

Soap Box

In case it’s not obvious I did not make this game to get warm fuzzies reading positive reviews or to rake in the few dollars it hopefully makes to at least make small dent in the the few hundred I sank into making it. I made this game as my tribute to President Trump and to show the world (or maybe just 23 people) that Trump’s support is strong and made up of rationale, talented people whose bond with the man can not be shaken. With the non-stop onslaught of self-righteousness, condescension and vicious calls for violence coming from the news media, Hollywood, college cry-babies and all the other far-lefties in between I felt I simply had no choice but to make this game.

I am well aware this is just a small silly game and I don’t imagine it will get that much attention – outside a few fellow indie gamer fans and friends/family I’m sure the install base will be pretty small. But knowing that even just a few people will see it – whether they’re pro-Trump or not – it will have been worth it.

Thanks to everyone who tries it out! … and thank you, President Trump!

Suburbs: You Are Here

I’ve been watching a lot of war documentaries this year from WWI to WWII to Korea and Vietnam – so I guess it’s no surprise that some artwork like this would come out. All these documentaries inspire me to create artwork that pays homage to the soldiers and the human achievements and tragedies from all the different wars … but so far I haven’t come up with much besides this yet. 

For what it’s worth this piece isn’t really what I intended it to be as it was originally going to be a standalone WWI scene more along the lines of that intense WWI scene in Legends of the Fall – but it morphed into something else. Anyhow even though it falls quite short of conveying what I’d like it to and the fact that it skews things a bit too much towards the USA – I figured I’d finish it off and post it anyhow. 

Beyond whatever issues myself or others may have about any given war, at the very least learning about each of them makes me appreciate (and feel plenty guilty about) just how fortunate I am to be able to raise a family in the safety (bubble) of an American suburb. Here’s to all the people, from the past to the present, who have put their lives on the line to defend the freedoms I enjoy today.

The Super Mario Alphabet!

Sorry I haven’t posted in a few weeks. Here’s the reason I’ve been away … introducing the Mario Alphabet!

A few weeks ago the thought popped into my head “I wonder if you could find a Mario character for every letter in the alphabet? … because if so, would there be a cooler/more fun way to learn the alphabet?!“.  Sure enough after checking online, I found there were more than enough Mario characters to do it (you could actually do over 5 alphabets and never repeat a character!).  After confirming it was possible I of course could have simple gone to Google images or other places to round up existing artwork and just copied/pasted them all into Photoshop … but then the artwork styles would have been inconsistent and worse the image quality would have been very poor for some of the less famous characters who only have teeny tiny thumbnails on the internet. So I decided to draw them all by hand on my iPad (~2 letters a day, 2 characters per letter). It took way longer than I had planned but it was a blast to do!

Please Note: In case it’s not obvious – I did not freehand draw any of these guys! I only traced and (lovingly) painted each one using whatever images I could find from the net. So I take very little credit for this project. The true brilliance here of course comes from Nintendo. Over the past few decades they have created a staggeringly long list of wonderful characters (each one with a great personality/story).  So here’s to Nintendo, Shigeru Miyamoto and the cast of talented artists/character designers who have built such an entertaining/creative body of work over the years that has and will continue to entertain kids and adults for years to come.

may or may not do something w/the Zelda franchise once I recover from this – but this year’s Christmas card has to be my next project!
